ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN SOCIAL AI

Job description
You have a proven track record in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and would like to advance the area of AI with humans-in-the-loop. You initiate, perform and supervise high-quality AI research that aims to design new AI technology that is social in nature and takes human factors into account. You are able to integrate insights from theory and practice and have an engineering approach to problem solving. Your aim is to apply and/or evaluate social AI technology in the real world with real users.

Your duties

  • acquire and contribute to externally funded research projects of the group
  • teach courses in the Bsc and Msc AI curriculum and supervise students
  • assist in the supervision of Phd students and contribute to the management of the group

Requirements

  • a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence
  • research experience with at least two of the following topics:
    • adaptive systems
    • affective computing
    • cognitive agent technology
  •  
    • conversational AI
    • social robotics
    • user-centred design and user studies
  • published in international journals and conference proceedings of high quality
  • strong communication and cooperation skills and ability to work in a team
  • educational skills and willingness to contribute to Bsc and/or Msc AI programmes
  • experience or readiness to supervise Ph.D. projects
  • experience or good prospects for acquiring external research funding
  • excellent command of the English language

What are we offering?
A challenging position in a socially involved organisation. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,637 (scale 11)
and a maximum €5,656 (scale 12), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: (assistant professor) is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 1 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 6 years, Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:

  • a maximum of 41 days of annual leave based on full-time employment 
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus

About the department
The Department of Computer Science has approximately 200 members, including 35 tenured staff members and 50-60 PhD students. The tenured staff members form the essential basis for the functioning of the department. A tenured staff member is required to make significant contributions to the research and education programmes, and to spend effort on administrative tasks at the department level.
